Would be a great pity to see Alliance follow similar path. Shareholder farmers who have enjoyed the
good times really need to very carefully consider whether they support or throw the processor
& feed source for their livelyhoods to the wolves.

Why not a per head retention from all throughput into 5 & 10 year Alliance Loan securities ?

    Foodstuffs do it - don't they ?

Possible pitfalls ? Any answer to fix things ?

If they didn't & things gravitate towards extra volume in hands of SFF assuming SFF could swallow it - then that goes a further step towards gifting an even larger slice of of the 50/50 SFF processing capacity into Chinese hands via SFF joint venture.

If SFF didn't want the extra - Alliance Farmers could be be tossing their Alliance Equity and future farming activities in terms of what goes to processing in part or whole into the ditch

The cockies have been pretty shortsighted in the past grabbing at the passing buck being waved by suitors and stepping back from the plate when the hand comes out for a pay some back in with any number of other past processors facing similar delemmas.

Alliance have made a rod for their own back - slept-walked through the last decade with poor management/governance. Their procurement practices have also been poor, disenfranchising shareholders and anecdotally being at the bottom of the heap for schedules (unless you are a 3rd party).

Difficult to get farmers to put their hand in their pocket for $50k each, when especially the sheep farmers have had tough years. Some will have tens of thousands invested already, and little in the way of capital appreciation or dividends to show. Do they put more money in, or take the risk of a white knight riding to the rescue.....??

If something happens with Alliance, then the other players stand to benefit, taking capacity out of the industry. Traditionally it has been the Co-ops that hold the capacity for the industry, especially for the seasonal kills and dry seasons - again at the benefit to the farmer, but also other competitors.

Don't think per head retentions would work - farmers want cashflow and they've got the option down the road to get paid in full in 7-10 days. Bit of a different situation to Foodstuffs.....

If you looked at their plants, you could probably take out Levin & Dannevirke in the North Island no probs - in the general area it leaves SFF Takapau, SFF Waitotara, Imlay, Land Meat, Anzco Rangetiki, Anzco Manawatu, Affco Manawatu, Ovation Feilding & Taylor Preston......

Nelson's can't be a big plant. Smithfield's closed so leaves Mataura, Lorneville and Pukeri - so a southern South Island focus.

But the challenge is underlying profitability. When SFF made almost $200m a few years ago, Alliance trumpted a record year and made about $75m. Performance needs to change (and think it is, but takes time!!).

I do feel sorry for Mark Wynn and Willie Weise - while there prior on the board/mgmt, not a situation of their making and now have to clean-up the mess!!
