Burnt through a quarter of the cap raising cash with sod all to show for it. Sales increase and expenditure decrease is still less than that. Apparently, the distant full year revenue prediction will be achieved with the launch of a new 'reserve' range and cans for the whole country... yeah, right... Whoops, wrong beer....
Nothing says high end, high margin like cans.

And a reserve range will just look ridiculous when they have to drop the price to get it sold. Like buying Lindauer Reserve at $9.99

Harder still to see a buyer for Moa. DB and Lion craft stables look full now. If anything, it could put more squeeze on Moa if Tutara, Emersons and Panhead all crank up production and chase sales.

There's a couple of important distinctions here - Tuatara, Panhead and Emersons brew their own beer in micro-breweries and that hasn't (yet) changed under their respective big brewer ownership. I'd note that Moa doesn't brew their own beer although it is brewed under licence by the McCashin's in Stoke, Nelson - yes I know that there is a lot of beer brewed under licence but it doesn't tend to be 'craft beer'. Even in the USA, the home of the 'craft beer movement' - even when they come under the ownership of a big brewer, the small micro-breweries are a point of difference. You don't really want the distinctiveness to disappear from the goodwill you bought with the label - case in point, Mac's Gold which no-one has the illusion as being anything than a label from a big brewer which is fundamentally different from what Lion purchased from the McCashin family.

With most of the pourage rights on-premise tied up with Lion, DB or Independent Liquor there isn't a lot of 'free houses' or bars without allegiances that can pour Moa. For a bunch of reasons, not being able to drink a Moa while you are out isn't healthy for brand loyalty.

So unless there is something intrinsic that makes someone want to drink it, or somehow the management can create enough extrinsic hoopla that you want to drink it then it's probably going to amble along. 42 Below did a really good job getting it on-premise and having brand reps who got it on the shelves and on the rail/well behind the bar where servers would pour it. Thanks to pourage rights on beer, that's a fundamentally a much harder thing to do and there's a crowded shelf where bars do get to have a non-aligned label - and Moa is up against a world of other beers.

I think they need the Hallertau type setup to promote the beer. That pub/bar/cafe/restaurant is never not packed. Good food and great beer.

As a consumer that doesn't really worry about the brand, i'm concerned about taste and availability. Brewing in a big facility doesn't mean the taste changes (if they are brewing professionally the taste should be consistent), however, Rep is correct, this opens up bars and supermarkets which will dramatically increase the availability which is great for someone like me who has to drive around Auckland just to get Tuatara.

Hallertau works because of the proximity to Auckland, it might work for Moa on a lesser scale, but the odds are really against them. They make average beer, at a Steinlager price point. What X factor do they have?

Tuatara/Panhead/Parrotdog have all taken off because of the number of freehouses in Wellington, why would they stock Moa if people don't want to drink it?

"Listed New Zealand brewer Moa Group has no plans to seek a multinational buyer, says its chief executive Geoff Ross, after craft beer minnow Tuatara was snapped up by multinational Heineken.
“Good for Tuatara if they want to get out while the business is still small. Moa is larger than Tuatara – according to AC Nielsen Grocery data – and we believe we have a lot more growth yet,” he says.
“So no, we are not looking to get bought by Lion or DB. We are looking to get more growth – so eventually we can buy Lion or DB.”

I'm just going to leave these quotes right here whilst I go buy some popcorn and sit back
