TAB has TNZ $1.42 and TUSA $2.60

    That $2.60 is pretty tempting

Win - Win situation. If TUSA win we win on Tab if TNZ win AIR NZ goes up.

Go on be patriotic and bet against TNZ, or better still be probiotic.

Not a done deal yet by any means, (who can forget San Francisco !), but having had a look at the upwind speeds and VMG its easy to see why the bookmaker has dramatically shortened the odds on TNZ.
I think TNZ has them beaten in light air conditions but it isn't always going to be light winds and as we know from incredibly bitter experience it ain't over until it really is over.

I suspect that the odds the Americans will improve greatly as the competition progresses. NZ will get well ahead and then, when we're all glued to the screen, someone will push the button and the electronic bugs will fly and Team NZ will lose any imagined control they have now. I really hope that I am wrong but I have a grand in an envelope and will make a decision by Tuesday.

Investing is a gamble - how often have you heard 'I think I'll take a punt on Spark' or similar

Nope ,Good luck with your gambling investments w69. If you can't differentiate between the two at this stage in your life ,i have no sympathy. A simple wikipedia will enlighten you. as far as keeping emotion out of gambling; have you ever watched the punters at a horse race?

I think it would be fantastic if "Aotearoa, glistens like a pearl, at the bottom of the world" tim finn; win the cup again against the USA but beware of dirty tricks and boat improvements from the TUS. Think TNZ also have improvements and haven't peaked too early.

$4.50 - $1.16 now. TNZ looked dominant this morning.

So the 1000 at 2.25 looking good

Should put 285 on TUSA to guarantee not losing if the US miracle comeback happens. Americans can do sneaky things in a week eh

Would be either 965 profit or zero loss on this investment

Risk mitigation better result than 1250 profit or 1000 loss.

Now that's what I call INVESTING

All good guys; what speed we have and tactically almost perfect races today with that poor gybe pre the 2nd start turning into an advantage.DOMINANT. TUSA will come back faster for sure; early days yet. I can't remember clearly but i don't think we were nearly so superior last time as now.

As cunning as a hungry beagle mate. I used essentially an almost identical strategy (coincidentally with the same amount of money) at the last cup to insure my TNZ bet thereby guaranteeing a bankable and investable return. Added quite a bit of spice to the overall cup viewing experience but I have to admit I was absolutely gutted the insurance bet on Oracle paid off last time.
Just as an aside, although I don't feel inclined to have a wager these days its worth noting that the TAB's cut on a straight 50/50 bet at $1.85 each way represents a margin of just 7.5% so for some sports betting their margins are dramatically lower than their normal margin on horse racing which I understand has a payout ratio somewhere in the low 70% range from vague memory.
I think a bet of the magnitude you've discussed is a form of investment in a loose generic sense because even taking off the TAB's theoretical margin of 7.5%, (a modest theoretical transaction cost of $75 which is far less than the cost of going to one decent international music show), one gets to make a lifestyle investment in really adding some serious spice to a whole regatta of yachting viewing pleasure, surely lifestyle enjoyment is a bankable investment, who could raise a logical argument against that ?

Honestly I'd rather pay $75 to add serious spice to viewing the entire America's cup than a one-off music show for a couple of hours. That said I think AIR will be a beneficiary of any win so I'm content to let them reap the rewards in due course knowing that provides a further small tailwind to their future earnings.
