Someone should start a straight out onthepunt thread where fellow sharetraders can share their 'certainties'

That sounds like the old compensation bet. Wellington win, yee ha and all happy. Wellington lose, got 100 smackers in the back pocket, so can have whatever your tipple is to ease the pain....

As the active partner in a harness racing tipping/selection service (tipstar.co.nz) I find the similarities between share trading and punting (note that punting race horses isn't gambling, gambling is sitting in front of a pokie machine and losing your money) interesting. I would say that share trading/investing is actually much more volatile due to the "pack" mentality of the markets. Long term investments mimics punting far more so than trading stocks. With anything it comes down to diligence and discipline. lose either and you'll be found out soon enough.

    Interesting stuff benjitara

Love the harness horses myself. Alas Hutt Park closed down years ago

Been a couple of syndicates which was great fun

I am 'investing' in Stunin Banner in the 7th (to win) at Manawatu today .... certainty I reckon. And for a 'punt will take a quinella (and a few trifectas with others for 3rd) with Stormy Breeze because that seems appropriate. Watch Peter Ferguson win a few today as well

Sent you a email to get the free weeks tips .... better be good

There is enough chatter in here to warrant such a thread. Some of us also do like the odd fiver on the rugby or the horses. And as the TAB call it investing and dividends there is enough share jargon to warrant inclusion in this forum.

LOL at winners comment re not telling Snoopy.

Won well didn't it. I select the Canterbury form and also do the Forbury/ west coast and Nelson circuits while my business partner does the north island and deep south.
As I stated before turning profits at punting is all about discipline and having a long-term view. the biggest obstacles are always our own characters.
Pleased to see you get a win.
keep it up and I may post the odd selection here if you wish

benjitara .... must say fast response to the email re free trail

All set up for Ashburton tomorrow seeing it a day off

yep ... discipline is the main ingredient .... I still remember my mates worrying about me at Yrentham one day .... had a decent win in race 2 and just watched the other races ... they couldn't understand that I couldn't see any 'value' to bet on .... trouble was I had to buy the drinks as they continually lost their dosh

Belong to a punters adjunct at my local club. $5 per head per week. Everyone gete a turn to bet $60 on a weekly basis. $60 is only about half the weekly kitty and the other half is saved to the end of the year. Drinks and food and a distribution of the funds follows and its usually close to $200 for the forty weeks. This year the party is at a race meeting and we go by bus. Most of the members dont know one end of a horse and the winner of this years "Punter of the Year" knows even less than the rest of us.

I put $100 at 26/1 fixed odds on Brew, back in 2000. It only made the field by winning what is now called the Lexus, three days before the cup. It then drew the outside draw, but was the lightweight.

    It won.

tomorrow, the lightweight only got in by winning the Lexus last Saturday, and it has drawn the outside.

I have put $100 at 41/1 on it.....

    Go boy.......

Man, I once got 9 out of 10 on the rugby pools, my missing game was the Warriors, who lost to Nth Queensland when Nth Queensland were poo-house. The week before the concession paid $10k, I got a measly $190.
