With so many platforms available right now IB, SAXO etc I would rather trade US ETFs due to liquidity issues and various options you have in the ETF field. You can always hedge your currency risk on the same platform but this will depend on the amount exposed.

bluesman please can you explain these platforms are there costs involved and where do we find them.
andewwfreestuff, a good summary, I too wish to involve investing in vanguard. This is so difficult from NZ. Of course you can do this thru a full broker but you will need to hold products in custodial services and likely to be charged a brokerage fee of 1.5%

For those considering a Vanguard ETF, you are not the only one.

I too contacted smartshares to see if they would consider adding an international ETF, and was told they are aiming to do it in H1 2015.
They also said they are adding 2 more funds this year, but didn't say what they are.

Thanks for the update on Vanguard, was looking at this a while back. On the subject of pitfalls one thing to check is Oz tax law and minors receiving income from shares. In 2009, anyone in Oz under 18 earning income from shares got about $450 tax free then was taxed by the ATO at 66%. Doubt you'd be affected by that as a non-resident but possible NZ has sonething similar?

Another option is to open an account with trade.com.au. You can access global shares at a brokerage of .6 percent and custodial is 0.1 percent. Also you have better access to the asx market
