Farmer told me today the price for mature stock at the works has fallen from $2,250 on average per head to $1,750 in one week. He's never seen anything like it.
Talk of lots of beef on refrigerated ships off the coast of China and the ships going round and round in circles as they're not allowed to dock.
"Interesting" season coming for apple exports too ?

Isn't China the world's largest apple producer and exporter? If things get bad there, maybe there will be an apple shortage.

Different season.
That’s why NZ and Australia do so well supplying summer fruits into the northern hemisphere off season.

My farmer friend mentioned the same but he is ok with keeping his animals longer until prices recover - which they will, he says. Issue is one of getting feed for the animals and in his case, he has plenty as his farm is a mixed farm with cropping for animal feed.

Some apples can stay in cold storage for up to a year, so NZ-grown apples compete with last season's cold-store apples.

No other places will take our apples....
Europe is Scales largest apple market, China 2nd. Issue will be Reefer capacity, both boxes and plugs, both China & NZ ends, as supply chain has slowed so much.

Scales have their own logistics business so must have some pull in that with shipping companies, space and boxes.
But not much good if no plug at the other end.
I actually think China seems to have reasonable control on the virus - it is the rest of the world with the issue......

A more balanced global supply situation in 2020 with sales more equally focussed between Europe / UK and Asia. Initial shipments to Asia are scheduled to arrive in early March, and to China in mid-March.

the reefer issues might impact there mid march china shipments
one step ahead of the herd
