5 picks per person as in the 2010 competition.

rules are the same as last year with exception of end date for entries because i remember being late with my entry last year and it was accepted about 1/2 way through january and i was so way not the last. i will make the deadline the end of jan 2011 no exceptions. late is any time in jan, too late is after jan 31 2011. on time is any time before the first trading day on the asx.

i have copied last years rules:

no stocks under 1c will be accepted..
Dividends will not be added to return...
takeovers will result in a new pick to the contestant, at the adjusted rate with new picks made quarterly...
5 stock picks only...
no options etc...
each stock pick will have a weighting of $10,000 (20% of portfolio)... ($50,000 in total for portfolio)...
so performance can be posted in percentage returns, and/or $ returns...
As I do not follow all stocks, Competitiors will be required to notify me of any change to specific stock selections, shall they change...(takeovers,stock spilts etc)...
Please PM me, or post here if there are changes...

all stock prices for the open of this years comp will be taken from the closing price of 2010... all closing prices at the end of the year will be taken from the last trading price on the last trading day of 2011...

does any one how do i get this to stick at the top please?

Hi Jenny.
Good on you for extending the dates. A lot of people are on Holiday etc.

Its funny how once rules are made they get set in stone but may I ask?

Why no options or stocks under 1c. Ive done rather well this year out of just such stocks and would have done better in the comp had I been allowed to select AVBOB as I intended instead of AVB.

I reckon if its tradeable it should be allowd.

There you go. One post in and already someone is giving you grief

Shasta is your man for getting a sticky on the thread. Just PM him.

Hey I see theres a Davidm lookin at this thread. You two related?

Thems the rules Strat, i agree about having no options or stocks under 1c, lets leave them to the day traders to play with, lets see who can pick stocks that will do well in 12 months time!

I've already selected mine so will start the 2011 comp off first!

DGR - Vastly undervalued & due to spin off projects into fully funded listed companies, the market can then re-rate DGR accordingly.
ACB - Large JORC uranium resource, & looking to double it with active drilling program, 2nd half of 2011 uraniums time to shine?
OEL - My perennial O&G favourite, Galoc phase 2, Turkey exit, & possible BHP deal, all in 2011 provides enough upside for me
AYN - Silver play, decent size resource & Twin Hills production due to start up anytime?
MLA - Healthcare play, small cap, & looking to grow by acquistion & seem to be heading into profitability

If these start moving early then so be it, it will just reinforce why i selected them in the first place!

Wheres the excitement in that. besides heres a few real world examples and Im a long way from being a day trader.

AVBOB 1c to 12c
BKP 0.45 to 0.9c
OROOA 0.1c to 0.3c
ATIO 0.7c to 1.7c
VPEO cant remember but good

If I had a financial adviser and he told me I couldnt buy this stuff or he couldnt buy this stuff for me cause thems the rules Id sack him :eek2:

Ive gone 100% oil... picking junior oil with huge leverage... Some of these stocks might take longer than the one year timeframe...

1) CUE -you know it... Junior oiler on track to grow rapidly.... 2011 drilling of appraisal well Barikewa set to add significant value... all downside risks supported by production/development...might sneak Matariki in there 2011, very similar to Maari but twice the size and 4times the stake... special well...

2) NGE -Holds two huge PNGLNG fairway permits, 6 in total... endowed region with natural resources ... multi national and major oil involved in 'land grab'...Probably the last/ but the largest available highly prospective acerage position PNGLNG wrapped into a small cap... ... .... One billion BOE in this...average board... Might take another year

3) OXX - same reasons as last year... mini oiler with big WA aspirations... Strong board, and new farmin partners able to realise huge value of drilling free carried offshore elephants WA... many shots to pull one off...

4) BUL - International stage CSG-LNG taking off... largest CSG acerage / Market cap on the ASX... Kogas onboard.... Worth multiples of current value...when this is realised is anybodys guess... CSG- a risk scale not seen like this, maybe ever...

5) FAR - Gambo Jambo... very risky, biggest leverage... This could win the competition alone in its own right...

Wow,

Is it really that time of year again, were by we get a tennis rack and wack ourselves on the back of the head repeatedly for 2 minutes until we force ourselves to write 5 stocks on this thread again. :p

My, how time fly's hey.

I have come to the conclusion that picking stocks is the worst thing for me. Usually say nothing and focus brings "some" sort of return, but actually picking them is like creating self taboo or we look back in another year and say, I have learned nothing.

Some are good at it, some are great at it, but I dont feel I am very good "at that".

May sit this one out guys, or if I feel encouraged, give it a go in another week or so. Is that ok?

macduffy
07-12-2010, 07:07 PM
Now don't be like that, drillfix!

It's not as if we're actually putting up any hard cash here although I agree that it helps focus the mind to have something riding on the outcome. I intend to either pick stocks that I already own or those that I'm prepared to risk a few bob on.

Selections follow within the week.

Right, strike while the iron's hot - no time to reflect, dither then change, or rub the worry beads:

AVB - copper - Brazil
GOR - gold - Australia
NKP - platinum - South Africa
TSV - tight gas - Australia
NWE - oil/shale - Australia/UK

May the commodities bubble build and not burst until Jan 2012

It would comply with all the remaining conditions....

Hi Jennym - thanks for running this. After such as dismal showing in the picks this year I have decided to tempt fate again and go with the same ones with one exception VPE instead of NMS. A sucker for punishment I am sure but what the heck. My picks if I may are then:

STX
PEN
CXS

thanks shasta for backing me up on the rules. options can be a pain because of expiry dates as much as anything else. shares at .1 of a cent that dont get delisted during the year just need to go to .2 of a cent for a 100% gain and still be a pile of junk.
i am quite high up in this years competition and my best ones started at about 20c and 30c.
this year i am going to leave mine until as late as possible, i will have a better idea of how they are moving. i would rather reduce my chances of having an nkp experience.
actually nkp might be a good pick - it might bottom out by the end of december and sort itself out hext year.

I have decided to go with a novel approach next year and only choose companies whose tickers start with A. If there is a comp next year I will be in for B's I am very bullish on oil (and gas to a lesser extent) and that is reflected in most of my picks. POO over US$120 year end 2011.

Here are my picks and thanks for running the comp.

I have tried to pick across a section of shares and ones that others haven't picked already.

NTU- Exposure to Uranium and REE
SER- if they can get a JV partner and graphite prices hold up.
CXN- building up revenue and good exposure into Asia, and there's life outside resource stocks.
BUR- because i think Uranium and oil will come into focus more next year
TIS- as they say in racing "a roughie" but if they get this commercialised next year could run.

What price do we get if we enter in January? Presumably the price on the day or do we get hindsight (31 Dec)?

MNC - proving up massive Cu deposit in Peru
CSD - tin in northern queensland
PPP - they don't come with less downside than this one. the tiniest announcement may give this one an easy 30-50 percent gain
GGX - may find partner in 2011 to exploit its phillipine oil discovery
AVI - another up and coming Cu producer

Thanks Jenny

MHM - Technology and plant for recycling of Aluminium slag plus more. Production about to ramp up in Aussie and expansion plans into US etc in place
LYC - Rare earths with first production getting nearer. First mover advantage.
ADO - Medical diagnostics international deals starting to roll out
MEL - Gas/CSG
CFE - Early stage resources investor. Marampa looks to be the next successful exit, plus should get the $80m owed to them. Only downside from competition viewpoint is they tend to pay good divvies which are not factored into results.

Hi folks,

I wish you all have had a very nice Xmas and will enjoy time off with family and friends over the New Year break.

Ok will play along this year again for some fun, doesn't mean to say I will back each stock chosen but would not mind backing it should I have enough cash to spread around.

My 5 picks/dart throws are:

UTO - Uranium
BMG - Iron Ore, Braizil (code changed from BZM to now BGM)
NTU - Rare earths, Uranium
AUT - Oil Gas
HAZ - Tungsten

Good luck and hope you all have a great trading year a head.

TRF..majority owner of IFE, iron ore, producing supposedly late 2011

Here are my picks:

ALB - suspended from trading due to money problems until latter part of 2010. Primarily a Ni play. They are still ramping up to full production and if they are successful the returns will be significant.
BSM - just had to pick this one. Predominantly produce lead and zinc. Their significant increase in production should see the share price move significantly.
IRD - this will be one of OZs largest magnetite operations. I expect to see growing interest as the company continues to prove up larger resources.
SHE - uranium in Korea. This company has an enormously chequered history, but if they find even half of what they say they might then there will be (very) exciting times ahead.
VMS - one of my picks from 2010 that disappointed with a 40% gain. Set to become the second largest tin resource. Has not been as sexy as KAS, but should be re-valued significantly in 2011 as resource size increases. Expect that tin price will continue to hold.

(Unfortunately no room for PEM. This company is very slowly doing everything right and their recent debt funded acquisition should produce significant returns. Increasing zinc and lead price will also help.)

So what starting prices will late entries and/or changes be based on? Presumably closing prices on day of entry/change throughout January and not back to 2010 closing prices?

After having seen the results of the NZX comp who wouldn't :confused:

AVB Copper is going to be the mineral of the year IMO
PEN Maybe a year to early, but I feel that more and more boxes are being ticked
QMN I had a shocker with this last year, but again it seems to be going in the right direction
ESI The tincom deal HAS to go through to ignite the SP
LOM. You just gotta love diamonds.

Had to choose between LOM, MHM and ARO. ARO is under the one cent barrier so got crossed off and I think that LOM will outperform MHM just on the fact that MHM has already had a huge run in the latter part of the year.

The reason that I have typed so much is cos I'm giving up smoking and my fingers need to be doing something :D and I have also been banished to the study cos they say I'm grumpy (wotever)

For 2011 have picked:
LNC - energy with huge unvalued coal tenements and mis-understood management
WFM - non resource with great potential and entrepreneurial drs/mgt
III - tungsten in short supply
EXG - gold wannabe 500k oz and looks undervalued and reasonable cash
ADD - more coal

MLA had a stellar run today, opening up from 1.3c, hitting 5.5c at one stage & closed at 3.4c on 57m - yet its still only a $13m market cap ;)

final cutoff date is last day of jan and this is strict.

You can't use month old prices otherwise someone will just pick 5 stocks that have gone up since end of dec. If you are submitting picks post dec you get the closing price of the day you submit it. That's why no late entries should be allowed as too many people now have different prices for the same stocks.

Only trouble with that, KW, is that different people will have picked the same stock/s but entered at different days, so that you would have a whole range of starting prices, which would be a nightmare to run.

Entries have been open for far too long - I've already forgotten my nominations, and will no doubt want to revise them before 31 Jan!

WTF?? Requires one spreadsheet with the differing start prices as all the closing prices will be the same - not too hard if one is good with xl. Agree with KW that should be the day you submit your posts otherwise it lacks credibility. We could all pitch in and get Jennym something for the extra work.

as a very late entry about to submit my picks. i think it fair that for those entering in 2010 the openning price be beginning of year 2011 (openning 04Jan2011) for those placing entries in Jan 2011 it be opening price day of posting. Originally I figured that because the competition is over a year that short term price action would not matter that much because the price has 11 more months to go down again. A lot of stuff can happen to a company in a year and as often as not, quick starters can become slow low finishers.
maybe I was wrong but I don’t think so. I will now set it up to accept prices on the day of entry for January entries because there is enough protest and it is a bit fairer. New ipo’s (there are a couple of these somewhere will be the ipo price(open on the day).

I don’t need any help. Cant really post a set of results until the close of entries at the end of jan, The 1st set produced last year was ˝ way through feb. I should be able to post results often because all I will need to do is run a bit of software with a data feed of previous day close and paste the list on sharetrader. Cant be much easier than that. I already get yesterdays close data for my charting package.

Colin:
Perhaps I started a bit early. Shrewd crude kicked it off on January 1 for start of asx on jan 3 or 4 and took late entries through January. I just thought I would start a bit earlier. Maybe next year, whoever runs the competition, might get the balance a bit better.

In fairness to those of us who picked stocks early & within the timeframe as per the first post, late comers should start with the higher of the closing price of the day slections were posted on Sharetrader, or the closing price on the first trading day of 2011/end of trading 2010.

I dont see why those who comply with the rules should be penalised by people picking stocks after the competition date!

What? I was just saying it is not too difficult and we could pitch in for jennym for the extra work?? No offence intended Colin.

Sorry, gaz, for misinterpreting the intention of your earlier post. I guess its just that my generation tend to have a stronger reaction to the use of the "F" word.

As regards the competition, I still think there should be a common starting point for each individual share chosen, and then a table can be prepared at the end to show the relative performance for each share; it would then be easier for others to determine the reasons why any particular contestant's "portfolio" performed better or worse than one's own.

not far to go until the end date for entries. last day monday 31 jan.
no more after that at all.

the january entries have start dates on the day of entry. that is the best compromise for simplicity and fairness.

my ones are:

cvr - gold
bau - bauxite
trh - potash and coal
cgv - ucg
ajm - coal, lithium

2 are my loosers from last year, a matter of timing only i hope.

Thanks Jenny, but in spirit of this thread, I am now going to choose to keep the original picks (whatever they were) as from reading a few posts back I noticed some mentioning about how the comp could be slightly flawed with late picks and editing, changing whatever.

Be what is may, I appreciate your efforts in running it this year like Shrewd Crudes efforts last year.

What would be ideal for Share Trader and the community is to have a script that Automates the process built into the site and DB so that all entries and rules are locked in solid right from scratch and with only say a Comp Moderator or Admin beng able to do edits afterwards with any required adjustments that are unseen (code changes or consolidations etc).

Maybe one of these years it will happen but in the meantime, thanks again for keeping this thread informed of such information.

Though hey, just noticed there is a code change on one of my picks. Being BZM has now changed to BMG.
(meaning, I am not changing my pick, but rather the code above has changed its code)

Do prices get picked from today onwards or on the date of our actual post? Because that will wipe away alot of gains already done to folks previous calls to some degree.

Anyway, keep the good work.

it is a good idea to set up a proper system sometime. it seems to me that every year, it is run slightly differently because someone different does it. last year was the first time i had ever heard of it so i entered and did ok. one advantage of having it as a part of the site would be that people type in their own entries.

Quite right Jen, with ST having a everybody sound off on exactly which sort of comp they have maybe next year we should add a $2.00 submission fee (ONCE OFF) so then with the proceeds, we can get a custom script guy to code it up as per request, providing its not a the super comp from hell that he has to code.

I mean, there is a MySQL DB that this forum uses, we just need to add columns, and edit a template which is viewable to members who are logged in. We can then add the Starting dates and Lock out time on it for no submissions afterwards. Then every member that enters their choices cannot edit, and each day, a cron script is then run to do a tally, or we can just add some 20 minute delayed Yahoo Code or something to update a running tally ordered by however.

I dont mind chipping in to do some work, or donating to the cause.

While we are at it, would be a good idea to also have a closest to the Pin competition for either next day ASX, DOW, SP500, Gold and Oil too :)

Anybody keen to vote and have next year Automated and also have daily closest to the pin comps as a sticky?

Personally, I like the way it's being done at present. It's a great effort by those that volunteer to do the job and I'm sure it's appreciated by all.

What I like about Sharetrader format is it's simplicity, no wakny adds and flash bits going woo in the corner of the screen, it's simple and loads up quick wherever I'm reading from, laptop, cell-phone or dialup out in the wops.

HCopper is becoming unreadable because of all the clickable options, drop down menus and other peripheral crud.

Keep it simple I reckon, as is, is perfectly fine.

Thanks to jennym for running the comp' this year.

Rev, fair enough and each to their own.

Though your post comes across like having an automated system then means having Ad's or complexity added and then also starts to make it look like HC.

You still need somebody to Moderate/Admin such an automated picking comp. Thus still why not be grateful for that, yet at the same time, "Save Time" for the poor volunteer whom is slugging it out completely when they dont have to slug it out.

In brief, adding such automation does not mean having any Ads nor does it or would it look like anything except how you view this page you are reading right now.

The ironic point here now is, its a stock picking forum, thus a stock picking comp. Now just like trading or investing, people pick companies because they believe the will Perform and give a return on their dosh, thus the company will perform good, or some better than others. Automation added to ST is only making a process simpler and to ease any burden, so whomever runs or moderates it, does not have to do what Jenny is kindly undergoing now with this forum. So tell me, is that not a good thing??? for her and for ShareTrader???

Again, each to their own hey.

Hey Ponda,

They say there's much less air pressure and available oxygen when you’re that high up on the list. Use care, take long deep breaths and don't overexert yourself. ;)

I'm worried about ya mate. :DAt least he wont be crushed by all the fat people above him

Hey there Jenny,

When you see the page you are looking at (is it a XLS spread sheet?

Choose to save it as HTML and maybe highlight cells and give each cell some padding and then "save as" html page complete or single to somewhere on your drive.

Then right click the html page and choose edit (or open it with your web editor proggy) and then paste the contents in.

Now I am not sure on the restirictions of what HTML can be added in these posts but you should be able just to paste it into using Advanced mode and then the Code button which is next to the PHP tab button thingy.

Try that and you can always, just edit it each time so there is not 50 posts of trying each time ...lol

You will get there, or PM the HTML file and I will add it in for you if need be!

Thanks again Jen, doing a great job there :)

some bad news for some:

Rule number one at the beginning of the competition is all picks must be >= 1c.
I have just found a number of breakers of rule number 1.
Pachino CES, CCC, STI, QPN, PZC {STI less than 0.01 on jan 7 when he changed pre to sti}
SLT has been < 1c up to jan 19 so it doesn’t matter when you lot picked it.
Entrep CEO, GNI, SLT, NDL, CCC {SLT less than 0.01}
STRAT AVB, GOR, NWE, SLT, TEX {SLT less than 0.01}
yabster GOR, MYG, AVB, ADD, SLT {SLT less than 0.01}

It looks like we have a wee list of crash and burners here.

THIS IS RULE NUMBER ONE!!!!!
The tragedy is that one of them is entrep who now was in front.
These are handled by adding the gains for the other 4 and dividing by 5.
The good news is that you can still win if one of your other picks is s real goody like skeets eqx last year.

OMG :D I saw that the results had been put up and I dived straight to the bottom and didn't see my name  and as I went further and further up the list I still couldn't see my name and as each nic went by, the post that I was going to write 'discussing' this issue with jennym (thanks heaps BTW) got more and more heated and then woe-be-tide-me-molly-woppy there was Ponda sitting at number four, YES, NUMBER FOUR. :D:D.

I had three New Years Resolutions this year. One was to stop smoking, one was to kick yankiwi in to touch and One was to beat STRAT. Three for Three. Now what am I gong to do for the rest of the year :p.

OK, maybe a little bit to early for cockiness, but can you just give me a wee bit of latitude here. :D

if you think that is too often, please say. i expect more than this will be too much.
this, below is for friday feb 4. we have had our first consolidation for the year - clips with dls.
please post any consolidations/splits etc, i might miss some of them.

for looking at opening prices, there is also

for this one, change 0ccu to :eio in the little box on the left where it says draw chart, or :whichever ticker symbol you want.

besides yahoo - thanks Shasta for pointing that one out.

Thanks for the update Jenny, as always, keep up the good work.

Guess you need to maintain 37% if you want to stay in the top 10 but I no doubt this can fluctuate depending on the overall markets? or what variation of sectors you picked.

Cheers again.
